What is USBOTA?

United States Bunkers on the Air (USBOTA) is an amateur radio activity that celebrates two powerful instincts: the drive to communicate, and the desire to understand and preserve our shared national heritage. Across the United States, bunkers and fortifications remain as physical reminders of the conflicts, tensions and moments that shaped American history — from coastal defence batteries to Cold War installations and civil defence shelters.

USBOTA exists to highlight these sites, encourage interest in their stories, and connect amateur radio operators across the country through a shared appreciation of history and communication.

USBOTA is not a competitive programme. We do not publish rankings or league tables. Our purpose is participation, discovery and community — not contesting.

USBOTA operates through two complementary tiers. The national tier provides awards and activities tailored to the United States bunker landscape. The international tier recognises cross‑border activity and encourages operators to connect with bunker communities beyond the United States when they choose to do so. Together, these tiers create a complete ecosystem that welcomes newcomers activating their first local site and experienced operators exploring historical locations across the country.

Every activation is an act of historical engagement. We invite you to join us — and to learn something about the bunker you visit, not just its reference number.

The values below define what USBOTA stands for and the principles that guide our programme.

What is WWBOTA?

Worldwide Bunkers on the Air (WWBOTA) is an amateur radio activity that brings together two powerful human instincts — the desire to communicate across borders, and the impulse to understand and preserve our shared history. Bunkers are among the most visceral physical remnants of the conflicts and tensions that shaped the modern world. From coastal fortifications to Cold War command centres, from anti-aircraft emplacements to civil defence shelters, they exist in almost every country — silent witnesses to moments of national and international significance. WWBOTA exists to draw attention to these structures, to promote interest in them as part of our collective heritage, and to connect the amateur radio community across the international boundaries that those bunkers were so often built to defend.

WWBOTA is not a competitive programme. We do not publish league tables or rankings. What we do is driven by the spirit of shared endeavour rather than  a contest. WWBOTA is about more than numbers.

WWBOTA operates as a two-tier system. At the international tier, WWBOTA rewards and promotes cross-border bunker activity — contacts between operators in different countries, activations across multiple nations, and the building of relationships across the worldwide bunker community. At the national tier, affiliated schemes provide domestic awards and activities calibrated to the realities of their own country’s bunker landscape. Together, the two tiers form a complete ecosystem — one that welcomes the newest activator visiting their first local bunker, and the most experienced operator chasing contacts across continents.

Every activation is an act of historical engagement. We invite you to join us — and to know a little about the bunker you visit, not just its reference number.

Why Bunkers?

Why Bunkers?

The United States has one of the most active and enthusiastic outdoor‑radio communities in the world. Programmes like Parks on the Air (POTA) have built a huge following, creating a culture where operators can find activity almost anywhere, at any time. For any new on‑the‑air scheme, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity: the bar for engagement is high, and operators already have a well‑established home for their portable operations.

USBOTA enters this landscape with a different purpose. It is not designed to compete with existing programmes, nor to replicate what they already do so well. Instead, USBOTA offers something unique within the U.S. OTA ecosystem — a chance to explore America’s defensive heritage, activate historically significant sites, and connect radio operation with the stories of the structures that once guarded the nation.

While interest in bunkers and fortifications is still growing in the United States, the potential is enormous. The country’s defence landscape is vast and varied: coastal batteries, Endicott‑era forts, WWII harbour defences, Cold War radar stations, missile sites, continuity‑of‑government bunkers, and civil defence shelters. Many of these locations are accessible, overlooked, and rich with historical context — ideal for operators who enjoy discovery, learning, and a sense of place.

USBOTA fits into the wider OTA community by offering:

  • A complementary experience — something operators can enjoy alongside POTA, SOTA, and other activities without conflict or competition.

  • A heritage‑driven focus — encouraging activators to learn about the site they visit, not just log contacts.

  • A slower, more reflective style of activation — ideal for operators who enjoy exploration, storytelling, and historical engagement.

  • A connection to the international WWBOTA framework — giving U.S. operators a pathway into cross‑border bunker activity when they choose to participate.

USBOTA is intentionally non‑competitive. We do not publish rankings or league tables. Our purpose is participation, discovery, and community — not contesting. In a landscape where many operators already have a favourite OTA programme, USBOTA offers a refreshing alternative: a chance to activate with curiosity rather than urgency, and to appreciate the history beneath your feet as much as the signal in the air.

Breaking into the U.S. market will take time, but every activation helps build awareness. As more operators discover the diversity of American defensive sites — and the enjoyment of activating them — USBOTA will grow naturally as part of the broader OTA community.

USBOTA welcomes everyone: newcomers visiting their first local bunker, experienced operators exploring Cold War relics across multiple states, and POTA regulars looking for something a little different. Every activation is an act of historical engagement, and every operator who takes part helps bring these sites back into the national conversation.
