Help Build the Future of USBOTA
USBOTA is growing — and we want you to be part of it.
Behind every successful amateur radio programme is a team of people who are willing to give their time, enthusiasm and experience to make it happen. As USBOTA continues to develop across the United States, we’re now building the team that will help take the programme forward.
We are looking for enthusiastic amateur radio operators to join the USBOTA team, from Regional Coordinators who can represent USBOTA in their part of the country, to volunteers who can help with the national organisation, awards and technical side of the programme.
Whether you’re an experienced operator, an active portable enthusiast, a club member, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who thinks “I’d love to get involved” — we’d like to hear from you.
Take a look at the roles below
Each position has an important part to play in helping USBOTA grow:
National Coordinator – providing overall leadership and coordinating the USBOTA team.
Regional Coordinators – promoting USBOTA and acting as the local point of contact across our five US regions.
Awards Manager – helping administer and develop the USBOTA awards programme. This role can also be combined with a Regional Coordinator position.
Webmaster – responsible for the USBOTA website and online services. This position is currently held by M9JSD and is not currently vacant, but technical volunteers are always welcome.
Want to get involved?
You don’t need to be a professional administrator, web developer or experienced manager. Enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to get involved are what matter most.
USBOTA is being built by radio amateurs, for radio amateurs — and we’d like the people helping to shape its future to come from the US amateur radio community itself.
If one of the roles interests you, or you’d simply like to have a conversation about how you could help, please get in touch.

USBOTA National Coordinator

USBOTA National Coordinator
USBOTA National Coordinator
Help Lead USBOTA Across the United States
USBOTA is looking for a US-based National Coordinator to take responsibility for the overall coordination and development of USBOTA.
The National Coordinator is the senior volunteer role within USBOTA and provides the overall direction and coordination of the scheme, working with the Regional Coordinators and other members of the USBOTA team.
The Current Position — And Why Is a Brit Doing It?
At present, USBOTA is being coordinated by M9JSD, who is acting as the Caretaker National Coordinator while the US team is being established.
There is, of course, one rather obvious question:
"Why on earth is a Limey running a US-based organisation?"
It's a fair question!
The simple answer is that USBOTA grew out of the wider WWBOTA project, and M9JSD was involved in developing the scheme and getting the US operation off the ground. Someone had to keep the wheels turning — and apparently nobody checked my passport first!
But USBOTA is a US-focused programme, and we believe its long-term leadership should be in the hands of someone based in the United States and connected to the US amateur radio community.
So, after getting things started, this particular British volunteer would very much like to hand over the driver's seat to someone who doesn't have to cross the Atlantic just to attend a meeting!
M9JSD will continue to provide support during the transition and will ensure that the knowledge, systems and experience already developed within USBOTA are passed on to the new National Coordinator.
What does the National Coordinator do?
The National Coordinator will:
Provide overall leadership and direction for USBOTA.
Coordinate the five Regional Coordinators.
Act as the principal point of contact for the USBOTA team.
Oversee the development and implementation of USBOTA policies and procedures.
Encourage the growth and development of the scheme throughout the United States.
Coordinate major USBOTA events and initiatives.
Work with the Webmaster and Awards Manager to ensure the scheme operates effectively.
Liaise with other organisations and amateur radio groups where appropriate.
Consider and respond to significant issues raised by Regional Coordinators and members.
Encourage the identification and preservation of suitable bunker and military-history locations.
Represent USBOTA within the wider US amateur radio community.
Work with the international WWBOTA team where appropriate.
Working With the Regional Team
The National Coordinator will work closely with the five USBOTA Regional Coordinators, providing guidance, support and coordination while allowing the Regional Coordinators to develop their own areas.
The National Coordinator should encourage communication between regions and ensure that USBOTA operates as one national organisation rather than five separate regional schemes.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a US-based amateur radio operator who:
Is enthusiastic about amateur radio and portable operation.
Has an interest in military, Cold War or historical sites.
Understands the US amateur radio community.
Can communicate effectively with people across the amateur radio community.
Is organised and dependable.
Is comfortable coordinating volunteers.
Has the enthusiasm to help USBOTA grow.
Can work collaboratively with the existing USBOTA team.
Previous experience in running an amateur radio organisation is helpful, but enthusiasm, commitment and good communication are more important.
A Great Opportunity
USBOTA is still young, which means the National Coordinator will have a genuine opportunity to help shape its future.
The foundations have been established. The website, systems, reference database and operating structure are being developed.
Now we need a US operator to take the helm.
M9JSD is quite happy to remain involved, provide technical support and answer the inevitable question of "How did you Brits manage to start a US bunker scheme?"
But the future of USBOTA belongs in the United States.
If you're a US amateur radio operator who thinks you could take USBOTA forward, we'd love to hear from you.
And don't worry — the current British caretaker promises to hand over the keys without demanding a cup of tea first. ☕

USBOTA Website & Online Services
The USBOTA Webmaster is responsible for the development, maintenance and ongoing operation of the USBOTA website and its associated online services.
Current Webmaster
The Webmaster role is currently held by M9JSD, who is responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of the USBOTA website and online infrastructure.
This is not currently a vacant position.
The role supports the wider USBOTA team by providing the technical infrastructure required to operate the scheme, including the website, online information, reference resources and other digital services.
What does the Webmaster do?
The Webmaster is responsible for:
Maintaining and developing the USBOTA website.
Managing website content and online information.
Supporting the USBOTA reference database and associated online resources.
Developing new website features and services where required.
Maintaining the technical infrastructure supporting USBOTA.
Working with the National Coordinator and other team members on website requirements.
Publishing USBOTA news, announcements and events.

Developing the website as USBOTA grows.
The Webmaster also works closely with the National Coordinator to ensure that the website continues to meet the needs of USBOTA members and the wider amateur radio community.

Anyone with suitable web development, WordPress, database or technical skills who would like to contribute to USBOTA is welcome to contact the team.

USBOTA Awards Manager
USBOTA Awards Manager
Help Manage the USBOTA Awards Programme
USBOTA is looking for a volunteer to take on the role of Awards Manager and help administer and develop the USBOTA awards programme.
The Awards Manager works closely with the National Coordinator and the wider USBOTA team to ensure that awards are processed accurately, efficiently and fairly.
The Current Position
The Awards Manager role is currently being covered by M9JSD, who will continue to administer the awards programme if necessary.
However, as USBOTA develops, we would ideally like this responsibility to be transferred to a US-based volunteer who can become part of the permanent USBOTA team.
A handover and ongoing support will be provided to ensure continuity.
What does the Awards Manager do?
The Awards Manager will:
Administer the USBOTA awards programme.
Process award applications and claims.
Verify qualifying activity against USBOTA records.
Maintain accurate award records.
Issue or arrange the issue of USBOTA awards and certificates.
Respond to general questions about awards.
Work with the Webmaster on online awards functionality.
Liaise with the National Coordinator on awards policy and development.
Monitor the overall awards programme and identify opportunities for improvement.
Help develop new awards and recognition programmes as USBOTA grows.
Working With the USBOTA Team
The Awards Manager will work closely with the National Coordinator, Webmaster and Regional Coordinators.
The role requires attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring that all operators are treated fairly and consistently.
A Double-Hatted Role
The Awards Manager role does not necessarily need to be a standalone position.
As USBOTA develops, the role can be combined with one of the five Regional Coordinator positions.
For example, a Regional Coordinator may also take responsibility for the national awards programme, provided they have the time and organisation required to carry out both roles effectively.
This provides an opportunity for someone who wants to take a more active role in USBOTA without creating an unnecessarily large management structure.
Who are we looking for?
We're looking for someone who is:
An enthusiastic amateur radio operator.
Organised and methodical.
Comfortable working with databases, spreadsheets or online systems.
Reliable and able to work independently.
Fair and consistent when processing award applications.
Interested in helping develop the USBOTA programme.
Previous awards administration experience isn't essential. The existing team can provide guidance and support during the handover.
Help Build the USBOTA Awards Programme
The awards system is an important part of USBOTA, recognising the operators who activate and hunt the historic locations within the scheme.
This is an opportunity to become an important part of the USBOTA team and help shape how operators are recognised for their participation.
